Dear Parents/ Guardians/ Sponsors/ Students and Friends of the Academy
I trust that you have enjoyed a wonderful festive season with family and friends. Cape Town is still enjoying beautiful summer weather so don’t stop visiting our gorgeous beaches!
I am happy to report that the Academy has started with a Musical Bang on Saturday 5 February 2011. We have had so many new students joining which I think is wonderful. All our teachers are back with us except for Deirdrè Brown (Violin), Deborah Isobell (Violin) and Gurswin Barendse (Violin). Deirdrè is currently in Kimberley doing her community service with the Department of Health, while Deborah is pursuing her career commitments and Gurswin has been transferred to Polokwane by the Army. I wish them well and trust that they will return to the Academy soon.
Students who enrolled for the 2010 practical exams have given a good account of themselves. Quite a number of them have passed with distinctions. I also wish to thank all the teachers who have gone the extra mile in preparing these students for their exams. I wish to encourage all students to continue with the hard work.
Warren Patientia, who leads the Academy Orchestra, has had a successful meeting with the Orchestra members and parents. Clear operational guidelines were laid down for both members and parents to follow. I am quite positive that should the stringent guidelines be followed we will soon have an Orchestra of Excellence! The Orchestra will also be going on a team building week-end from 4 to 6 March 2011.
The Strings Orchestra (Violin) led by Peter Vetro is in full swing and has an excellent repertoire. They are more than ready to perform at functions.
The Academy Jazz, band led by Lauren Hendricks, will be in full swing from Saturday 12 February 2011. Great strides have been made by the band and they are building up a steady repertoire.
Melanie Fryer, Head of Brass, will be starting the Brass Ensemble soon…….. we are awaiting this with bated breath.
Later during this year our partner school (EDIM-France) will be visiting to offer master classes and exchange best practices. We look forward to their visit.
Despite all the positive things happening the Academy is still experiencing challenges:
1. We desperately need a building of our own! More and more people are enquiring about daytime and evening classes.
2. We need 2 pianos as our piano student intake has increased dramatically.
3. We need Sponsors to adopt a needy child who wants to learn to play an instrument.
